It was the 76th running of the Indianapolis 500 and the 35th under USAC sanctioning. She finished 11th, the only rookie running at the finish, and was voted Rookie of the Year. The tone for the race was set early when pole position winner Roberto Guerrero spun out and crashed on the parade lap.
