He drove the #19 Tibon entry in the mid-to-late 1970s, backed by local Indianapolis sponsors including Hubler Chevrolet and Wire Radio 1430 WIRE, an Indianapolis AM station. Tragically, Gehlhausen was killed in a sprint car accident at Eldora Speedway in Ohio in 1981, cutting short a racing career that had made him one of the most recognized grassroots Indy car competitors of his era.
