Gordon Johncock was one of the most celebrated Indy car drivers of the 1970s, winning the Indianapolis 500 twice - in 1973 (rain-shortened) and in 1982. Driving for team owner Pat Patrick, Johncock was a perennial front-runner at Indy throughout the decade, making qualifying-week speed runs like this one a regular occurrence.
