65 USAC JIM HURTUBISE MEL KENYON AUTO RACING CRASH LANGHORNE 8x10 PHOTO INDY 500

$15.25

FIRE IS A RACE CAR DRIVERS WORST ENEMY! This photo was taken at Langhorne, Pennsylvania of the 100 Mile U.S.A.C National Championship on June 20th, 1965. Ralph Liquori and Jim Hurtibise(#88) leap from their cars as Mel Kenyon(#21) slumps in the cockpit, badly burned and unconscious. Note the burning alcohol fuel vapor fire and on steel guard rail in background. All cars were flagged in and the race completely stopped for almost an hour while the track was being cleared. This was the first time in modern history that this had been necessary. This is a great action shot that shows the real drama and danger open wheel warriors face. This is a a truly unique piece of history. Taken by photographer David Knox, Parkesburg, Pennsylvania.
